Romania, Sulina

The delta formed by the waters of Danube which flow into the Black Sea is the largest and best preserved of Europe, a biosphere reserve that has been declared heritage of the mankind by UNESCO.

The town of Sulina, located at the mouth of the central branch of the Danube Delta, was the siege of the very first European Commission - C.E.D. (the European Commission of the Danube) established here in 1856. C.E.D.’s successful activity determined the rapid development of a safe traffic on the Danube (mainly due to the construction of the Sulina navigation canal) in the service of industry and agricultural production, a spectacular expansion of the economic and multicultural life of Sulina and also a discreet transformation of the territory.

The Romanian partner in this project is the Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs (Department for Historic Monuments). Together with the main local partner - Tulcea Institute for Ecomuseal Studies (ICEM) - a deeper approach of the territory was initiated, within the project, by researching and structuring the resources of industrial archaeology. Therefore the already functioning territorial network of ICEM can be completed and integrated within the larger frame of the ecomuseum where people will be able to better understand the complexity and the evolution of their territory.
